If the bowl movement is not regular as it has to be or if it is painful while passing stool then you are probably experiencing constipation. Before trying over the counter medicines, there are few remedies that can be easily followed at home to get rid of constipation.

Remedies

  • Always be hydrated by drinking more water. It is recommended to drink at least 8-10 glasses of water. (If the doctor has advised or limited your intake of water limit for any medical reasons, please follow according to doctor’s advice)
  • Intake of more fiber rich foods like oats and other whole grains are suggested as they aid in digestion of food. For the same reason fiber rich fruits and vegetables can also be consumed. Beans, nuts, grapes, cherries, apples, banana, prunes, and whole grain bread are some of the food items you can take to get rid of constipation.
  • Walking is one of the best remedies. A brisk walk of 30 minutes a day induces the body organs to work efficiently and also to improve digestion.
  • Flaxseeds and fenugreek seeds are considered as good laxative agents. Flaxseeds can be included in salads by roasting it or can be taken with water. Water, steeped overnight with Fenugreek seeds can be taken in the morning (Care should be taken to filter out the fenugreek seeds). Fiber and mucilage content in these seeds helps in easy bowl movement.
  • Cod liver oil taken in the form of capsule or a teaspoon of olive oil with lemon juice may work for treatment of constipation.
  • A glass of warm water with juice of half a lemon also aids in stimulating bowel movement.
  • Avoid alcohol and caffeinated drinks that causes dehydration.

In general, it is better to avoid food that is made up of refined flour and consume digestive friendly food like yoghurt and fiber rich food to avoid constipation. Any food allergy factors should be considered before following any natural remedies. If the constipation is severe, it is always better to check with your doctor.
